When we receive Jesus, a battle begins between our flesh that wants to lead us and the Holy Spirit who also wants to lead us. Romans 8:14: For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
We cannot trust the feelings of our flesh. They can deceive us and lead us astray. When I used to smoke, the nicotine gave me some good feelings. But cigarettes were harmful to my health. I am thankful that the Lord helped me to stop that habit before He saved me. When I have had pain such as from an abscessed tooth, pain medication has given me relief. But pain medication taken for too long would become addictive and destructive. Our flesh can have all kinds of desires and addictions that feel good when gratified but that are harmful and sinful. The only time we can trust our feelings is when they are provided by God and are Biblical. Jesus is called the Prince of Peace. When we receive Jesus, He gives us peace. Isaiah 9:6: For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.The peace that Jesus gives is called peace with God and the peace of God. Peace with God is a reality that we do not feel. The peace of God can SOMETIMES feel good. The peace of God must come before the good feelings and provide them. Galatians 5:22: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
When we are filled with the Spirit, the fruit of the Spirit SOMETIMES results in good feelings. But whether or not we have good feelings, we must always walk in the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 5:7: (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)I believe we should walk by faith, not by feelings, although good feelings will often follow. It can SOMETIMES feel good to be right with God. SOMETIMES our flesh will ignore the good feelings from God and seek its own. |
